Saw numerous posters/blog posts about this. 3 bands and some fun and games all for charity!
Arrived at 9pm to a filling up Brickyard and a DJ playing an ecletic mix of metal, funk, hardcore and rock. Got to the bar, £1.50 selected pints! But where was the £1 JD and coke the poster said!
Minor quibbles aside, time for the bands! A compere announced the bands for the night and also announced what fun and games we will all be having! I understand none of the bands had played in Carlisle before so it was interesting to see how they would go down.
Pink on Pink- female fronted funk/disco. not my usual cup of tea but very entertaining and provided us with covers of Freakout and another old disco song which name I cant remember!! Also, the original material was very good too with some members of the crowd dancing! Strong performance with a very tight rhythm section and a nice change to the usual bands I go and see.
A change over consisted of musical statues, downing contests and even a date auction! aswell as the DJ playing varied musical styles
Roses For the Dead- I have only heard material through their myspace and I was a big fan so I was looking forward to seeing them live. They did not dissapoint! Their live sound is far better and heavier than the slightly underproduced myspace MP3s. Opening up with a speedy version A Blinded Heart they provided a strong energetic set of modern hardcore with melodic elements and also faster thrashy sections! We got treated to two very tight covers, This Years Most Open Heartbreak and Dying In Your Arms by Trivium. Unfortunatly they announced that this could be potentially their last ever gig due to the drummer moving. Which would be a real shame because he has an excellent screaming voice to complement the melodic vocals of frontman Tim and was keeping the rhythm time changes very tight! Finishing off with a fast original song that got the crowd moving Im sure they post-humously made some new fans in Carlisle!
some more party games and a DJ set provided the entertainment whilst 5000bc got ready. The compere announced the main event, the lights when dim and they were bathed in a cool blue light and after the first blastbeats and screams we were off!
5000bc- again only heard of these through myspace MP3s and they had a far better live sound! All members were technically fantastic throwing in an experimental mixture of danceable grooves, blastbeats and melodic vocals to keep their solid deathmetal more interesting than the average deathmetal band! The vocalist had a very good range of deep growls, high screams and also a good clean soaring voice for the softer parts. They pummeled the by now moshing crowd for around an hour with no covers, all original material! Excellent headlining band who I hope to see again in Carlisle!
To sum up this was one of the most FUN nights Ive ever had at the Brickyard and all in the name of charity! Was good to have a compere as this created hype before the bands came on stage and got our attention! DJ was excellent too, playing everything from Killing Joke to Second to Last. The games seemed fun tho we didnt take part in any! only gripes were no £1 JD&coke and I thought 5000bc especially would have benefitted from the venue's flashy lighting system but I havent seen this in use for the past few gigs I have been to.
Here's hoping for a Childs Play 2!
