Whilst I dig your two reviews, i couldn't help feeling a little irksome (thats right) about criticising a band for not being "proffessionals in their field". Are there any people around here who are proffessionals in their field?
I have no idea why I'm asking this.

see what you mean aye, dunno why you couldnt have spoken to me on MSN about it though. anyway, yeh suppose i could have phrased it better - i meant that none of them are really very talented at playing their instruments yet, in comparison to the standard that you would expect a gigging, recording band to be.
also, why you had to name this thread 'Adam,' fails me - all it does is draw attention to myself, and as Im the only one doing any reviews at the moment, such quibbles with the phrasing of sentences, even though its quite palpable what I mean is a little 'irksome' itself.

Yeah, I did think the reviiews came off very negatively. I think there's a fine line between being critical and just slating someone, and you crossed firmly into the slating section with the ponse review.
Now, I know its all about individual opinion and all that jazz, but I think it just went a little too far in that instance. Remeber, if you put a load of local bands off with abrasive comments then they'll be less likely to get involved and contribute, which has led to the polarised situation with reviews we have at the minute (i.e. you're the only one contributing!)
I'm not suggesting you start writing arse-licking comments just to get others involved, but a moderate toning down of criticism might go a long way...
After all, MS needs a lot more people to get involved to make it work.

Yeh I do see what you mean but Id been critiscised in the past for not being critical enough. Possibly I went too far toward the other end of the extreme (i.e.blatant slating) but it was an honest opinion. Ponse are no where near the standard that will challenge other local groups - they really need to put a lot of effort in. The fact that they're starting to is admirable but I had to get across to them and others that read the reviews where they at in their development based on the recording that i was given by Mark, which was poor.
Equally, if theres lots of people who think Im not doing a good job, then they should have a go instead. Im the only one doing any now because I enjoy it, it's good practise for the future and it's helping with my degree. Mark likes them, and keeps asking me to write for the site, and the general consensus has been good from the forum. Apologies to members of Ponse if offended, I really do know how it feels aswell, but now a little older and wiser I understand what it all meant - you just need time, and you've got lots of it to become more experienced.

It's cool man, I was kind of frustrated anyway with uni work Ive got on and exams and that shit, with the reviews on top of it I just took badly to what I thought at the time was unneccassary critical hair-splitting. I think its good though that we can talk about this sorta stuff sensibly though without it turning in to an argument as with other threads and in the past.

I don't get how being negative will make a band go away. It makes more sense to me that criticism would make bands want to prove people wrong. Oh well.

i think reviews mean more to a band thats just starting out, than a band that has been goin for a while. and i really negative first review would just shit on there moral. still it a review is just one persons opinion.

word man, when i read one of the first motive reviews of the vigil i was fucking distraught like, we'd had so much praise from further afield and put alot of effort in so we were really disappointed. lookin back, thats two/three years ago and i totally see what it means, even though im still proud of the vigil its now understandable when reading back the comments that were made it helped me a lot in the long run and by writing reviews now for motive i hope i can do the same.

Yeah, I think I caught the earlier review.
On a second reading, it is a fair review (as I've heard the demo) but I think it is a fine balance between contructive criticism and harsh slating.
Still, keep up the good work man. Although I seem to nit-pick at every review, I'm only trying to put across my opinion on both the band and the review.
Keep em coming!
