hey there first time ive seen motivesounds and im impressed! didnt know any of this was going on in carlisle, my friend told me about it and so well done, i feel like i have missed out on a lot of stuff!! im from carlsile and had no idea this was going on. i must be getting old, i used to put on gigs in manchester, before i moved up here 5 years ago.
as i havent ever seen these bands (or most of the bands, ive seen the forgotten north i think) the reviews will be helpful and stuff but i think the reviews seem to be written for people who DO know what the bands are like. like in some reviews reviwers say things like "you'll have seen this live" or "this is a live favourite" and never try and pin down the bands music or what it sounds like without refering to bands people may not have ever even heard. the first review i read - just as an example - that you have done (the Let Airplanes Circle Overhead one) mentions bands ive never heard, and seems to be negatively inclined most of the way through but then says "bumming over" at the end. thats a bit contradictory i think and left me unsure as to whether the CD is good or bad, which some others do also, such as the harbourcoat review i read.
sorry if ive seemed contradictory!! just as a newcomer to the relatively new site it is how i feel, so i will carry on ploughing my way through the rest of your humongus site!!! ill be at the gigs in the future for sure
also, another question...is the music movement in carlisle relatively young? what is the general age of the bands? im guessing with a proffessional site like this the band quality must be good?
thanks, Callum

Most bands are on average between 17 and 23 ish, I think.
As for the quality of bands, I think there's 1 or 2 amazing bands, a few good ones, and the rest not so good. Many will disagree with this though, I'm guessing.

must see local bands-
*ctrlaltdelete (instrumental excellence)
*second to last (awesome live. awesome on record, signed a 1 record deal with lockjaw, which kind of speaks for itself)
*Tauntra (prog ska from Annan. it's a lot better than you'd think. amazing)
*Snooky (alt rock with poppy bits done good. great live)
*Reluctant To Speak (Mental screamy hardcore stuff. just see them)
Other bands worth seeing are Chapel Ten, Let Airplanes Circle Overhead and My Last Act Of Bravado. There's more but in my opinion you should try and catch the above bands as soon as you can.

i've only heard one track off the new LACO, but it seems the overall opinion, from those who've heard it,is that it's pretty awesome stuff. the review was hard going though - maybe the urine fixation that put me off.
anyway, most of the bands mentioned are off-shoots of, or related in someway to godspeed you black emperor!, apart from slint who are the daddies of the post-rock sound. if you're ever unsure, allmusic.com is the best resource for finding out more.

the review confused me a bit too (especially comparing our music to pissing your pants), but i'm sick of way too positive reviews so it was all good. i thought the godspeed references are flattering, seeing as we have a quater of the members. we're more "godspeed you black dice", anyways. james will want me dead for that. maybe i'll submit my own review.
i'd say there are 3 bands in (and around) Carlisle, which I've seen (im still to catch a few) that i'd attend a gig for. the others just seem to fill out the bills. just go to all the gigs you can, i cant pretend to be any expert anyways, ive seen about 1/4 of the bands mentioned on here due to work/school/hatred and so on.

...maybe that should be the title of the as-yet-unnamed bit of your new ep?

Callum, if you're that bothered about the scene, why don't you actually get out there and see a couple of bands and make up your own fucking mind.
what a pointless post. Reviews are mainly aimed at people who've heard of a band and who the release is targeted for. As for the bands in the review who've you've never heard of...well in my opinion you'll either fucking love LACO, and think they are the most original thing to come out of stevie wonder's arse, or you'll fucking hate them due to the fact you have never bothered to listen to any music from the genre that influenced them in the first place.

heh who'd have thought it my cd collection confined to 'off shoots of GSYBE!' shame on me.... i have no idea what's in your cd collection, but the review for the most part only alluded to canadian post-rock bands. as for "lie dream": yours is the stupid post, my friend. it's quite possible to not have heard any of the bands that influenced LACO just because, well they're not exactly mainstream now, are they? if you're only just discovering new music and you're unsure where to start, then maybe you haven't heard of any of these bands. also, it is entirely possible to enjoy LACO without having to absorb the output of constellation records first. fact.

also, it is entirely possible to enjoy LACO without having to absorb the output of constellation records first. fact. Seeing as I only own one record on constellation, and barely listen to it, I'd say that's fairly accurate. Oh, and if you want to know when our next gig is go and look at the gigs page.

What the hell are you talking about? Why would you 'fucking hate them due to the fact you have never bothered to listen to any music from the genre that influenced them in the first place'? You hate them because of your own musical ignorance? What?! I could understand the use of the phrase 'experimental' grating, but the band aren't overly derivative, really. They use guitars and work within certain constraints. That's not something to dismiss them for. And the most original thing to come out of Steve Wonder (bowels or not) was his instrumental part in making Martin Luther King's birthday a national holiday in the USA.

Average age of bands is boosted by at least two bands: The Last Picture Show (with our almost-50 bassist) and My Last Act of Bravado (the pension-collecting Hilly) ;D

I am probably guilty of in-jokes or whatever in my reviews i have done in the past, thats why i dont review, because i am shit. But yeah, there will be another review possibly 2 of the L.A.C.O album along shortly. but yeah, a discussion without anybody saying someone takes it up the shitter, nice one.

maybe the pissing comments has something to do with our best heckle ever "David Langfield's pissed himself!" yes.
also as hilary mostly said we sounded like hrstra and i dont think me, nor james have even heard them, maybe luke has...i dunno, but he's never mentioned it.
as for bands we sound like, i think we sound most like Tarantel (on most songs). but i only first heard them AFTER recording all our songs. ace. anyways, you people even heard constellation? apart from GSYBE! and Do Make Say Think, there are no post-rock sounding bands actually on their roster. the rest is weird noise, weird electronica and weird european goth world music. apart from that band that sound like joy division.
if i wandered into a strange city, i'd wanna know what whack to check the fuck out, by the person who should know best. HOWLETTE.

dr stefan bukake, yours was the stupid post.
the point that was being made was that if you wanna know about bands playing in and around the local scene, then dont rely on reviews, go to some gigs, and you can make your own mind up.

for the sake of Callum's sanity, let him work out who he might like to see before going out. if he doesn't like punk or ska or ska-punk (or whatever it's called this week), he will want to avoid a number of the bands mentioned here.
randomly turning up at the brickyard is no guarantee of a good night - if you're not into the music and you don't know anyone it might not be a great evening.

is this a good moment to point out that you mention constellation in your own biography? ....which wasn't written by us. Anyway, I think it's futile to attack a band for being 'unoriginal'. I mean, why not go a step further and say using guitars is unoriginal? I mean, when was the electric guitar invented? Over half a century ago? Probably. There are groups like Wolf Eyes who make their own instruments and equipment but they still end up sounding like a bunch of other bands. Whatever. I don't see how a band's supposed influences should affect how people listen to them. I don't turn off Sonic Youth when they start using screwdrivers and making noise and listen to Glenn Branca instead. Because even if they're using a tried and tested technique, the sound they create is ultimately entirely different. Yeah.
