JOHN PAUL JONES, DUKE ST, WHITEHAVEN
TUESDAY 28th AUGUST 2007
Whitehaven based independent record label Letterbox Records celebrates its second anniversary this September with the release of their sixth and seventh albums and a showcase from this local based, but internationally renowned record label.
Set up by Local man Gavin Stephenson in 2005 with a passion for music and a fistful of grit and determination, Letterbox Records has enjoyed a very successful second year with the labels releases gaining airplay on BBC radio 5 and XFM, consistently positive critic response in national magazines like Mojo, Q and Word and one of their bands, Morning Bride being invited to appear on the cover-mounted CD given away with the August issue of nationally distributed music magazine Word.
With national and international distribution for the label via Forte records the label continues to expand with a roster that includes Scotland’s Amateurs, Americans Aaron Schroeder and The Arrogants, French duo Watoo Watoo and Swedish six piece Penny Century.
In conjunction with UK promoters Trampoline Letterbox Records is bringing over Swedish band Penny Century to tour the UK, as well as visiting London, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh Penny Century are also visiting Whitehaven to appear at The John Paul Jones on Tuesday 28th August.
Originally playing in various cult punk, rock or indie-groups the six soon-to-be creators of the most beautiful Scandinavian pop music imaginable, met each other in their mid-teens. Since there wasn’t a lot do in this corner of their world bar heavy drinking or writing songs Penny Century embraced both. On strangers’ balconies, in snowstorms on their way to parties or during friendly afternoon drinking they really began to know one another and slowly began putting down the foundations for the band.
Their songs revisit this time of coming of age, a time of getting to know yourself and the friends at the same time. Teaming their lyrics up with the kind of classic songwriting that offers a nod to contemporary indie pop, but is also intelligent and varied enough to suggest a grounding in classic 60s pop. Led from the front by the gorgeous Julia Hanberg a young woman possessed of a voice to die for; part Marianne Faithfull part Dido, their combination of the modern and understanding of the a stylish musical history has already built them a legion of dedicated fans in Sweden and Norway, and helped them secure support slots with The Hives and Gogol Bordello.
Although the members of Penny Century are only in their early twenties they have already established themselves as exceptionally gifted songwriters with four EP’s and their debut album Between A Hundred Lives just released on Letterbox Records.
Their debut British tour will give UK audiences to sample just what the fuss is about as the six piece bring their sparkling, life affirming collision of melodic pop and quirky, inventive and unique songwriting to these shores.
Penny Century will appear with specially selected guests on Tuesday 28th August at The John Paul Jones, Duke Street, Whitehaven. Admission is free.
First band 8.30pm.
