that bands very rarely get signed from sending labels demos? and it's the bands that don't try and get signed that do get signed?
i think a band has a better chance of getting that deal from gigging and building up a reputation and releasing their own music. bands that do send demos seem to concentrate too much on being signed than their actual music, which ultimately means they don't get that deal because it isn’t good enough.
motive sounds is yet to receive a demo which has made us act on it and we have boxes full of demos from around the world.

It's human nature to favour an established opinion rather than something completely unknown, untried and untested. That's why advertising works and people buy music after hearing it on the radio or at a gig. It'd take a rather special demo or a lot of luck to get signed off the back of one demo alone.

I would say every band is trying to get signed, but like you say, lots of bands try and do it in different ways. Creating a reputation for yourself is absolutey vital, record labels want to see that half their work is already done I think in todays climate, you need that "buzz" on your band before anything happens. Its a tough game
