Has anybody heard the new Modest Mouse record? I was so disappointed by the last one (literally, the thought of it still depresses me. It's one of the few records that I've ever really regretted buying, and in fact, I gave it to a second-hand shop in August. Along with old punk albums like Pennywise (WHY did I ever own a pennywise album??? WHY?), which just goes to show how ill-regarded the albums had to be before I got rid of them.
So, I'm really really worried that it's going to be rubbish, and that MM will become one of those bands that I used to idolize, but now think is faily mediocre. Help!

Johnny Marr plays on it. It'll either be utterly amazing or so so bad.

As far as I can tell, since Dramamine (which I think is the first song on their first record) they've got progressively worse. Also they're one of the worst live bands on the planet.
I know this doesn't answer your question.

One of my friends got the leaked version from the net and said it was fantastic, I'm interested to hear it to see if Johnny Marr's still got it. What was so wrong with the last album, I don't own it but absolutely love the earlier stuff (Lonesome Crowded West in particular)
I definately think it'll be worth the listen

I know this doesn't answer your question. They wern't that bad live. Just took hours to set up. And only played songs off their last album. They were dissapointing, animal collective were worse.

I've seen MM live James/Liam, and yeah, they did take ages to set up, and when they had they played only very recent songs (except an amazing version of Paper Thin Walls), but I still thought they were excellent live - Isaac Brock has a brilliant voice and the band were really tight. The last album was just completely overproduced I thought, it was really lush sounding compared to the earlier stuff, and for me, that jarring quality was the whole point of MM in the first place. Plus i almost felt the songs were taking the piss a bit - nothing of the quality and poignancy of 'Pretty Sunset' or 'Trailer Trash'. I haven't heard the new arcade fire record yet. But then, i haven't heard the first one yet either. I like 'wake up', if that's it's name. But otherwise - the singer totally steals Brock's schtick!

ive heard it and on a whole thought it was fairly good, probably more melodic than previous albums, although good news was pretty melodic.
i'd hazard a guess to say that if you didnt like 'Good News...' then it's likely you'll be disappointed.

Gutted. Although I've just discovered that Jeremiah Green is back on drumming duties, which can only be a good thing. The drumming in Lonesome Crowded West is one of the reasons I like the album so much.

Some of it reminds me of 'The Moon & Antarctica' which is good and seems a bit darker than 'Good News...'

Modest Mouse have a biography written about them, apparently. I bet it's the most boring book ever written.

No. They used to be average, now they're worse.
On the other hand, Comets On Fire are probably the best modern rock band.

Luke, you're a fucking liar if you don't admit that at one point Modest Mouse meant the world to you. Maybe not anymore, but just to say they used to be 'good' - !
However, Comets on Fire DO rock my socks.

They've never released a consistent LP. They've written some amazing songs though, lots of which I still dig. I used to like Dashboard Confessional though, so it's irrelevant to suggest that my 14 year old self was any sorta authority on good music. Also, aside from Comets, the Panda Bear LP is fucking awesome.
