Unreal. I doubt i will ever see an act as good again in my lifetime. Not too good turn out but that speaks volumes about how lacklusture Carlisle is as a musical city, im sure most people would rather see an Arctic Monkeys or Libertines tribute act that are now regularly churned out and hyped up. Anyway.... That's an unfair statement mate. Without being a cunt Blair , I dont see my statemant as unfair. From an opinionated point of view it gets right on my nerves when true visionaries are shunned-EDAN- prime example, where as if a music mag refers to a band as 'The New Arctic Monkeys', wahey we have a sell-out! Im just a bit sick of seeing the same bands playing the same songs and looking the same, and still people are going mental for this diluted recycled shite. As always on here it boils down to personal opinion but from my point of view i prefer sounds coming from bands that aren't sounding how they are to be flavour of the month.

Well, I'm not into going to see The New Arctic Monkeys but you're right, a lot of people will make a big effort to see an overly-hyped NME-loved bag of bollocks.
As I said, it's a shame the entry cost was double for non-students. A few people I've spoken to agree that it's a bad idea.

Why? I'm pretty sure he's right. It's a personal choice. But anyway, i knew last night would have been amazing. I'm going to see them tonight in Sub Club. If its peronal choice then why bother to pull me up on my opinion in the first place?

Bands/acts play, people turn up. Whether people turn up or not is a personal choice. Not whether they are "flavour of the month" or not. Kevin Costner - "If you build it, they will come."That statement is 100% true

Kevin Costner - "If you build it, they will come."That statement is 100% true. Kevin Costner didn't say that. I'm sure a ghost told him. Though he might have repeated it later in the film. Waterworld was shit.

That new film with Kevin Costner and (I think) Ashton Kutcher looks amazing though.

As I said, it's a shame the entry cost was double for non-students. A few people I've spoken to agree that it's a bad idea. a bad idea but a necessary one, given how close the gig came to bombing - it was done virtually at the 11th hour. also, a healthier turnout helps in the future, every time beatin' planks or whoever approach the brickyard with booking advice. otherwise, they won't get listened to next time, and there'll be no more of the likes of edan for you to turn your nose up at (unless embrace or the ordinary boys is more your bag?). if you've never bought gig tickets and flogged em on ebay, or given away tickets to gigs other people have paid to get into, then your conscience is clear. it's a shame then that i've got it on good authority that's not the case... at least you can sleep comfortable in the thought that the brickyard lost money though, eh.

Hi there
Walter, right? I don't deny having touted tickets in the past, and that's irrelevant to this issue anyway.
I'm not sure what 'given away tickets to gigs other people have paid to get into means' (and isn't giving away tickets generous?).
I can't say I'm happy that the Brickyard has lost money either.
I'm quite sure you know my 'taste', or lack of, doesn't include Embrace or The Ordinary Boys!

What I was getting at with the embrace/ ordinary boys crack was that without anyone supporting the alternatives, that’s as much as anyone can expect for a scene in Carlisle in the future without contributing to one. When the major-label cash cows are herded into town, it does nowt to benefit or enrich what’s already here – except maybe keeping the sands centre in business, that renowned hotbed of grass-roots music The rest of this I’d better address with mr greenfeld in a PM, before the shit-slinging begins in earnest...

I've no interest in shit-slinging, I simply commented on pricing and on what people had said to me. End of.

You both have valid points.
I find it unfair students getting a shitload of discount (no im not a student hater or out as i'm a student myself but a one who actually works too.) but if that decision was not made to give students half price entry that gig would have well and truly fell on its arse.
I've already had my say on people turning their noses up at the likes of Edan so i wont go into that again.

Hey Chris, I've no issue with that and my laziness when it comes to gigs (leaving the house in general actually) is inexcusable but, hey, I admit it (the late finishes midweek don't help).
I wasn't trying to stir up anything - next time I'll just PM you. Tone of voice, etc. is lost on here and I really feel life is too short and the scene is too small to fall out with people.
I don't hate students either, I've been one!

This is the cry of promoters everywhere since the dawn of time. "We brought [insert name of obscure artist here] and no-one came, but as soon as [insert name of nth rate NME band here] and people crawled out of the woodwork!" It's just the way it is. Don't get too hung up. Is it really a surprise that Carlisle turns out to be less 'cool' than you'd imagined?

I dont give a flying fuck about 'cool' and certainly dont go out the way to find obscure acts either.Obscurity means nowt to me, im a Beatles (the biggest band of all time?) obsessive.I cant stand people who use obscurity in music to be impressive so its a bit harsh labelling us as promoters of that kind. Ask Johnny about that one he booked EDAN. We certainly aren't taking that promoter stance you mention either. We were genuinely pissed off that EDAN was basically snubbed. And we are not bitter about turnouts at The Brickyard as our past 2 gigs before that got well over 150 people in for: 1. A local headliner 2. An unsigned act with local support As i mention in nearly every post it boils dow to personal opinion, i personally was upset that an act that blew my mind was ignored and im sure if more people had of made an effort they too would have got that same feeling off that gig.

Very well said mate. Maybe it was because it was a Wednesday?? I know it's a poor excuse but would count for quite a few people. Although, i be The Wheel was packed as always.
